Lumberjacks Fall on Sophomore Day

The Lumberjacks women's basketball team dropped their regular season finale Sunday afternoon to the Williston State College Tetons 72-63.

The first quarter was tightly contested with neither team able to gain much of an upper hand. After ten minutes WSC held a 17-14 lead. Hanna Plumbtree was big for the Jacks in the first quarter, nearly getting a double-double in the first quarter with 8 points and 8 rebounds.  The Lumberjacks came out strong on both ends of the floor forcing multiple turnovers on the defensive end of the floor and starting the quarter on an 8-1 run to take a 22-18 lead. The Tetons would tie the game back up at 24-24 a few minutes later. On the ensuing DCB possession they were able to work it inside to Plumbtree where she would get fouled and make both free throws. Over the next handful of possessions, the teams would trade made baskets and the lead. The Tetons were able to go on a 12-5 run over the final three and a half minutes to take a 41-33 lead at halftime. Amari Butler and Plumbtree each had six points in the quarter to lead the Jacks.

In the third quarter the Lumberjacks used a strong defensive effort to help cut the Teton lead to one possession 48-46. DCB held the Tetons to just 33% shooting from the field in the third quarter including just 16% from beyond the arc. WSC would get a shot to fall at the end of the third quarter to push their lead to 55-49. Butler paced the Jacks with 7 points and Rozalind Strong added 5. Early in the fourth quarter Butler would find Strong on a fast break to get the Lumberjacks back within two at 55-53. The Tetons would respond with a 17-5 run to close the game, winning it 72-63.

Plumbtree led three Lumberjacks in double figures with 20 points and also pulled down 20 rebounds for a double-double. Butler added 18 points and Strong finished with 12 points in her final regular season game in "The Woodshed." Taylor Moffat led the Tetons and all scorers with 24 points.

DCB finishes the regular season 14-16 overall and 8-13 inside the Mon-Dak. The Lumberjacks open postseason play Wednesday at 6:30p.m. in Bismarck against United Tribes. The winner of that game will advance to the Region 13 Championship Game Sunday March 3rd in Ironwood, MI against Gogebic Community College.
