Jacks Outlast Mystics in OT

The fans in "The Woodshed" were treated to a thriller on Wednesday night when the Lumberjack women's basketball team took down the Bismarck State College Mystics 99-88 in overtime.

The Mystics started on a 10-1 run. The Lumberjacks responded with a 15-6 run to tie the game at 16-16. The run was fueled by great effort on both ends as all six Jacks that saw the floor scored in the first quarter and the DCB defense forced 8 Mystic turnovers in the first period. BSC would pull ahead to a narrow lead of 23-20 after one period. A back and forth second quarter saw multiple lead changes. Again, it would be a balanced offensive attack that would push the Jacks ahead to a narrow halftime lead of 37-35.

The Mystics started the second half just like the first half on a run this time a 9-3 run to give them a 44-40 lead. DCB ratcheted up the intensity on both ends of the floor forcing 9 BSC turnovers in the quarter and Amari Butler scored 12 points in the quarter including 6-6 from the free throw line to take a 66-58 lead into the fourth quarter. A poor shooting quarter of 23% for the Lumberjacks allowed the Mystics to work their way back into the game. The Mystics would hit a three pointer with 1:38 left in regulation to take a 78-77 lead. After a few defensive stops by both teams DCB found themselves with the ball on the baseline with 5.9 seconds remaining. On the inbound Hanna Plumbtree was fouled and went 1-2 at the free throw line to tie the game at 78-78. On the ensuing Mystics possession, the DCB defense was able to get a stop and the teams prepared for overtime.

In the overtime period it was all Lumberjacks as Butler would score 9 points in the extra period including a perfect 4-4 from the field. In the end DCB would grab the 99-88 win.  A big key in the game for the Jacks was the free throw line as DCB shot 32-42 in the game for 76% and the Mystics were just 3-8 at just 38%.

Butler led all scorers and five Jacks in double figures with 34 points, Kiara Comeaux added 22 points, Rozalind Strong Plumbtree each had 14 points. Karrington Eugene dropped 12 points and pulled in 14 rebounds for a double-double. Brynnlee Murdock led BSC with 26 points.

DCB improves to 12-13 overall and 6-10 inside the Mon-Dak. The Lumberjacks continue their homestand with a match up with Dawson Community College Sunday afternoon. Tipoff scheduled for 12:00p.m.
