Redhead's and Nelson's Career Days Push Jacks Past Mystics in OT

Coming off a 79-78 win over the University of Jamestown JV. A game which the Jacks would tell you was not their best basketball; they knew they would have to come to play if they wanted to get a road conference win to close out the first semester. The team answered the call and earned a 100-96 overtime win over Bismarck State College to close out the first semester.

The Mystics used the three ball to take control of the game early. The Mystics led 29-22 just past the halfway point of the first half when the Jacks offense got going. Mikah Nelson and Brendan Redhead combined to go on a 9-2 run to tie the game. A Max Groom layup gave the Jacks the lead at 33-31. After that the Mystics started to heat up from beyond the arc again going on a 20-10 run to finish the half to take a 51-43 lead at the break. At halftime BSC had hit six 3's and were shooting 54% from beyond the arc.

The Mystics would be able to stretch their lead to 13 early in the second half. The Jacks offense then came to life and with the help of some defensive stops began to chip away at the BSC lead. Eventually the Jacks came within one possession. Brendan Redhead would hit one of his nine three pointers with 5:45 left in the game to give the Jacks the lead. From there the two teams would go back and forth with the Jacks holding a narrow lead. In the final minute of regulation, the Jacks held a 91-90 lead. On the ensuing Jacks possession, they would turn it over on their side of half court with 3.4 seconds remaining giving the Mystics one last shot to win the game in regulation. The long shot would be no good and the game would head to overtime.

In the extra period the Jacks would get on the board first when Jon Rey Taylor found Mikah Nelson underneath the basket for an easy two. Garrett Bader answered for the Mystics with a three to put the Mystics up 96-95, that would be the last field goal made in the contest. On the next Jacks possession Nelson would be fouled connecting on one of two free throws to tie the game back up. Hard defense down the stretch would lead to free throw opportunities for both teams. BSC would be unable to convert on their free throw chances. On the other hand Max Groom and Brendan Redhead each would connect on a pair of free throws putting the Jacks up for good 100-96.

I can't say enough about this team and their heart."
