Lumberjacks Win Overtime Thriller

The Lumberjacks Women's Hockey opened their season Thursday night on the road against Lake Region State College. It would take overtime, but the Jacks would come out on top with a 4-3 win.

It did not take long for the scoring to get going as DCB would find the back of the net a little more than two minutes into the contest. Kendall Guenther scored the first goal of the season unassisted. Just nine seconds later the Royals evened the game at 1-1. Both teams had powerplay opportunities in the first period but both teams were able to kill off the penalties. After one period it was 1-1 and DCB held a 20-5 SOG advantage.

The Jacks started the second period on the penalty kill and were successful in stopping the Royals. Both teams would each have another powerplay opportunity in the period but would be unsuccessful. After one period the score remained 1-1 and the Jacks had outshot the Royals 33-18 through two periods.

Last years point leader for DCB Michelle Landsverk would break the tie three minutes into the third period, Sara Smith and Jenesha Hammond were credited with the assists. Almost immediately after scoring the Jacks found themselves on the penalty kill and were able to stop the Royals powerplay attempt. The Jacks took a two-goal advantage with 13 minutes remaining in the period. Hammond netted a goal of her own unassisted. It would take just two minutes for the Royals to get the deficit back down to one at 3-2. With under three minutes remaining the Royals would tie the game at 3-3. With 1:27 remaining in regulation both teams would commit a penalty and would skate 4 on 4 for the remainder of the regulation. At the end of regulation DCB held a 47-31 SOG advantage. The period would start 3 on 3 with neither team able to score. A timeout would be taken with 1:08 remaining in overtime a timeout would be taken. Out of the timeout DCB would win the faceoff and get a 2 on 1 breakaway. Hammond would find Trinity Tanner for the game winning goal with under a minute remaining in overtime. The Jacks outshot the Royals51-35. Kara Zelyck picked up the win in the net with 32 saves.

DCB moves to 1-0 with the win. The Jacks have some time off before their home opener November 1st against the very same Lake Region State College Royals. Puck drop set for 5:00p.m.
