The fans that braved the subzero temperatures and made their way to "The Woodshed" Sunday afternoon and Monday night were treated to two thrilling men's basketball games. In the Sunday afternoon game, the Lumberjacks picked up an 85-80 victory over the Thunderbirds of United Tribes Technical College. On Monday night the Jacks fell 71-68 to the Mystics of Bismarck State College.
85-80 win over United Tribes
The Jacks came out and took control of the game early opening up a double-digit lead. The Jacks shot nearly 64% from the in the first half including 15 points from Jaden Arzola. At the half DCB led 46-36. The Thunderbirds used seven second half three pointers to get themselves within striking distance of the Jacks drown the stretch the Jack were able to maintain a one or two possession lead. Down the stretch DCB was able to make enough plays to hold on to the 85-80 victory. Arzola led all scorers with 26 points, he was joined in double figures by Shaun Armstrong, and Phil Gibaut who each had 16 points, Armstrong also pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double. Jalen Blanchard added 10 points off the bench for the Jacks. Houston Davis led UTTC with 23.
71-68 loss to Bismarck State College
Unlike Sunday afternoon the Jacks offense struggled to get things going in the first half Monday night. DCB shot just 39% from the field and 18.8% from beyond the arc. The Jacks also failed to have a player reach double figures. Whereas the Mystics shot 56% from the field and 37.5% from the long range. Still at the half DCB only found themselves down eight at 33-25. The Jacks broke their shooting slump early in the second half and found themselves right back in the game. The Mystics and the Jacks would swap the lead eight times in the second half and be tied five times. Arzola would tie the game at 68-68 with just 17 seconds remaining. With BSC looking to hold for the last shot Avery Wesley would hit a 3-pointer from the right wing just before time expired to give the Mystics a 71-68 win. Arzola again led all scorers, this time with 17 points. Armstrong and Blanchard joined him in double-figures with 16 and 13 respectively. Javier Sideregts led BSC with 13 points.
The Jacks now sit at 14-7 overall and 1-4 inside the Mon-Dak. DCB will travel to Dawson on Sunday tip-off is scheduled for 4:00p.m. (CST)
