The Ladyjacks and Lumberjacks both traveled out to Montana for the past two days to square off with Miles City Community College Pioneers and the Dawson Community College Buccaneers. Both teams had similar results on their trips, winning in Miles City the first night before driving up to Glendive the second night and coming up short.
Ladyjacks 74 Pioneers 55
Coming off a win on the weekend against the Northland Community College Pioneers, the Ladyjacks traveled west to take on the Pioneers from Miles City. These two teams played earlier in the season with the Ladyjacks coming away with a 73-65 win. The Ladyjacks jumped out ahead early and led 14-9 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Pioneers got the hot hand and tied everything up at 27 going into halftime. The third quarter was the difference in this one, as the Ladyjacks came out firing and put up 31 total points in the quarter. In the fourth they continued to grow their lead and put the Pioneers away, winning 74-55
In the game the Ladyjacks had three starters that scored in double figures. Maria Moore with 15 points, Alyssa St. Pierre with 14, and Jacie Hall with 14. Trinity Goggles came off the bench and added 13 for the Ladyjacks. St. Pierre was close to having a double-double as she fell short having nine total rebounds. The Ladyjacks defense was able to hold down the Pioneers scorers, as only two scored in double figures.
Lumberjacks 90 Pioneers 71
The Lumberjacks were looking to redeem themselves from earlier in the season when they lost to the Pioneers 104-72. One of the main factors in that loss was second chance opportunities The Lumberjacks gave up 16 offensive rebounds which led to 13 buckets for the Pioneers.
It did not take long for the Lumberjacks to come out firing in this one, as DeAngelo Bell set the tone early and often for the Lumberjacks leading the team with 33 points on the night. By halftime, the Lumberjacks grew a lead big enough that the Pioneers could not overcome, leading 50-27. In the second half, the Pioneers out scored the Lumberjacks 44-40, making the final score Lumberjacks 90 Pioneers 71.
To go along with Bell's 33 points, Surafel Berhanie and Deron McDaniel both had big nights for the Lumberjacks. Berhanie continued his hot shooting as he knocked down five three pointers for the Lumberjacks to help his way onto 17 points. McDaniel filled it up by attacking the rim, but also by knocking down six three pointers of his own on his way to 24 points overall.
Buccaneers 67 Ladyjacks 49
The Ladyjacks looked to win the first two games against the Buccaneers. Previously in the season the Ladyjacks won 67-65 over them. Unfortunately, that would not be the case in this one.
To say the Ladyjacks offense struggled at the start of the game would be a polite way to put it, as they would only score 3 total points in the first quarter, falling behind 16-3. In the second quarter, the Ladyjacks cut into the lead making the halftime score 32-21. Both teams remained close until the fourth quarter where the Buccaneers put the game away and won 67-49.
Maria Moore was the only one to score in double figures for the Ladyjacks, as she put up 23 points totals. As a team, the Ladyjacks shot 8-31 (25%) from behind the arch. The Buccaneers also out rebounded them 37-30, making it a steep hill for the Ladyjacks to overcome in Glendive.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action next on Monday January 24th as they will travel down to Bismarck to take on United Tribes Technical College. In their previous matchup this season, the Ladyjacks won 63-54 over the Thunderbirds.
Buccaneers 112 Lumberjacks 69
Sometimes in sports it is just not your night and that was the case here for the Lumberjacks as they squared off with the Buccaneers. The Buccaneers just seemed to not miss at all, shooting 16-33 (48.5%) from behind the arch, and 10-13 (76.9) from inside the paint. Every single player scored for the Buccaneers, six of whom scored in double figures.
For the Lumberjacks, it was the opposite side of the coin. As a team they shot 8-30 (26.7%) from behind the arch and 5-10 (50%) inside the arch. To make things worse, the Buccaneers out rebounded the Lumberjacks 52-28.
Bell and McDaniel were the bright spots in the stats column, as they both scored 19 points respectfully for the Lumberjacks. Needless to say, the Lumberjacks will look to move on after this one and regroup. They will travel down to Bismarck on Monday January 24th and square of with the United Tribes Technical College Thunderbirds. A crucial match up for the Lumberjacks who are currently looking up at the Thunderbirds in the standings. Game time is set for 7:30 P.M.
