The Lumberjack Men's Hockey Team went 1-3 during the Big Mountain Classic in Colorado. First falling 5-4 in overtime to the University of Denver. Then falling 7-2 to Northern Arizona University. They followed that up with a 5-4 loss to Colorado State. DCB ended the weekend on a high note with a 7-5 win over Grand Canyon University.
5-4 OT loss to University of Denver
The Jacks who entered the week ranked 20th in the latest ACHA West Regional rankings found themselves down 3-0 to the Pioneers who came into the game 13th after two periods. Kayden Cey got DCB on the board three and a half minutes into the period. Jace Thompson was credited with the assist. Just three minutes later Nick Cofer cut the Jacks deficit to just one at 3-2 Jacob Measel had the assist. Denver quickly pushed their lead back to 4-2 with a goal of their own. With just five minutes remaining DCB got back to within one goal of the Pioneers as Logan Mantell found the back of the net, Cey had the assist. Two and a half minutes later Ethan Unger even the score as Cofer and Dodge Long set him up for the game tying goal. Neither team could score in the final two and a half minutes and the teams prepared for overtime. In the extra period the Pioneers would score to take the game 5-4.
7-2 loss to Northern Arizona University
The Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona came into the contest ranked 17th in the latest West Region rankings. NAU scored two goals in the first period and five goals in the second period. The Jacks were able to answer with a goal in the second by Cey with Cofer and Thompson notching assists. DCB added a goal in the third from Carter Ralston, Mantell and Long each had an assist. However, the five-goal deficit was too much to overcome and NAU got the better of a Lumberjack battle by a final score of 7-2.
5-4 loss to Colorado State
The Rams entered the Big Mountain Classic not ranked. However, CSU scored the only goal in the first period to take a 1-0 lead. DCB wasted no time in the second period evening the game at 1-1 when Alex Lorenz scored off a Kole Fitzpatrick assist. CSU retook the lead with seven and a half minutes left in the period. Late in the period Measel would tie the game back up off a Ralston assist. One minute into the third period, the Rams regained the lead at 3-2. Ralston knotted the game back up and Cofer was credited with the assist. Less than two minutes later Cofer gave Jacks their first lead of the game, Thompson and Charlie Heimbeck had the assists. The Rams would steal the game late with a pair of goals in twenty-five seconds to win the game 5-4.
7-5 win over Grand Canyon University
The Lopes of Grand Canyon University entered play at the Big Mountain Classic ranked 9th in the West Region. GCU jumped out to a 2-0 lead. DCB responded with two quick goals of their own to tie the game. The first goal was scored by Thompson, Nick Curtis and Cofer each had an assist. Cofer was the Jack that evened the game, and Thompson added an assist to his stat line. After one period the teams were tied 2-2. It would be the Lumberjacks that scored back-to-back goals to take a 4-2 lead. Jeremy Klimchuk netted the first goal and Curtis assisted on his second goal of the game. Mantell would then add to his weekend stat line with a goal Curtis added his third assist of the day, Long also assisted on the goal. GCU got themselves back to within one goal at the halfway point of the period. Just a minute and a half later the Jacks stretched the lead back out to 5-3. The Lopes capped the period with two goals to tie the game back up at 5-5 as the teams prepared for the final period of play. A pair goals by Long, one of them shorthanded would give the Jacks the lead for good picking up a 7-5 victory. Heimbecker, Unger, and Ralston each were credited with an assist. Rylan Labrie picked up the win in net with 47 saves
DCB now sits with a record of 9-8-2-1. The Jacks take on Williston State at home tomorrow night. Puck drop is set for 7:00p.m.
