Ladyjacks Volleyball splits first day at Lake Region Slamfest

DCB volleyball earned their 5th win of the season beating Oak Hills Christian College 3-1.  This followed a morning loss to Assiniboine Community College by the same 3-1 score.  

The Ladyjacks had one of their best days of the season statisticall as they played well for all 8 sets.  They played Assiniboine much tougher then earlier in the year losing in four sets 21-25, 16-25, 25-23, and 20-25.  

DCB hit a season high 37 kills with freshman Ashlynn Starry leading the way with 8 and fellow freshman Michelle Krahn chipping in with 7.  Freshman Kiara Hamel added 6 with five other Ladyjacks picking up at least one kill.  

"We hit the ball well all day and the results showed up in the amount of points we scored", stated Head Coach Mike Smith.  Sophomore setter Abbey Franklin picked up a season high 19 assists to go along with 15 digs, another season high for her.   

Defensively the team used a relentless block constantly turning back a powerful hitting ACC team.   DCB earned 4 blocks but many others resulted in ACC having to re-set and penetrate the wall set up by their freshman middles Lexi Gullett, Amy Stolz and sophomore Rebecca Helmeczi.  Starry and Krahn also added to a tough Ladyjacks defense at the net.  The Ladyjacks picked up 81 digs fighting off the ACC attack.  Freshman libero Sarah Marshall picked up 18 digs in just 3 sets before leaving with an injury.  Freshman libero/DS Karrien Marteniuk picked up where Marshall left off earning 12 digs while Krahn added 10. 

"Our serve receive was much better today as we only made 11 service errors in 8 sets today, added Smith.  

In the late game the Ladyjacks picked up their 5th win of the season downing Oak Hills by scores of 19-25, 25-14, 25-22, and 25-11.  Setting a new season high for kills at 42, passing their game from earlier in the day, the Ladyjacks played sloppily in the first set before turning it on in for th balance of the match.  Krahn picked up 13 kills on just 21 attempts with just 2 errors.  Stolz chipped in 9 kills while Starry added 6.  All three setters hit double digits in assists with Franklin picking up 12, Starry 12 and freshman Jayda Kinistino adding 10.  Kinistino added to her team lead in aces earning 3 more.  

Defensively Gullett picked up 3 blocks while freshman right side Cassandra Nagy added 2.  Marshall lead the way in digs with 12 while Hamel picked up a season high 11 digs.  Marteniuk dug 10 balls to add to the team's 68 total digs.  

The team will play four year school Canadian Mennonite University and Northland College on Saturday, their last road games of the year.
