Jacks Upset Bid Comes up Just Short

The Williston State Tetons entered the evening as the only unbeaten team in the Mon-Dak at 6-0 and were 10-0. The Lumberjack women put that unbeaten record in major jeopardy Wednesday night, but the Tetons would hold on in the closing seconds to win 81-78.

The Tetons raced out to an early 12-2 lead to start the contest. The Jacks responded with a 15-0 run to take a 17-12 lead. At the end of the quarter DCB held a 20-18 lead. The Jacks were able to push their lead to six at 26-20 thanks to a balanced scoring attack. Williston would go on an 18-7 run over the final five minutes of the second quarter, thanks in part to 15 points from Cami Harris in the quarter. At halftime the Tetons led 43-35.

WSC would manage a small lead for most of the third quarter. A 16-5 run in the final stretch of the quarter would put the Jacks out front 61-55. Amari Butler would score 12 points in the quarter to lead DCB. The fourth quarter was full of momentum swings and free throws.  A pair of free throws from the Tetons would tie the game up at 75-75 with 2:03 remaining. The Jacks would turn the ball over on the ensuing possession. DCB would get a stop the following trip down the floor to keep the game tied. The Jacks would fail to score on their next trip. A pair of free throws would give the Tetons the lead at 77-75 with under a minute to go. The Jacks weren't done though as Butler would score to tie the game and get fouled. Butler would miss the free throw leaving the game tied at 77-77. Taylor Moffat would get a lay-up to go to give the Tetons the lead at 79-77 with 32 seconds left. On the following DCB possession Karrington Eugene would get fouled and go 1-2 at the line to cut the lead to one. WSC would make both free throes to go up 81-78. A three pointer at the buzzer would not fall for DCB and the Tetons would hang on to win 81-78.

Both teams struggled to take care of the ball as DCB committed 33 turnovers while WSC turned it over 31 times. The Tetons had the advantage at the free throw line as well as they shot 26-27(96.3%) for the game and the Lumberjacks shot 20-34(58.8%).

Butler led the Jacks with 26 points, she was joined in double figures by Hanna Plumbtree with 15 points. Moffet led the Tetons with 26 points.

With the loss the Jacks fall to 7-5 overall and 3-4 inside Mon-Dak play. DCB returns to nonconference action Wednesday night at Dickinson State to take on their JV. Game time is set for 6:00p.m.(CST).
