Ladyjacks Finish off Mikinocks

The Ladyjacks basketball team had some time off this month due to three games being postponed. On Tuesday they were able to get back into action as they squared off with the Mikinocks from Turtle Mountain Community College. Earlier in the season the Ladyjacks traveled to Belcourt, ND to take on the Mikinocks and won 88-65.

The second match-up took place at the Woodshed and saw a competitive first half. In the first quarter the Ladyjacks grabbed an early lead. The score was 21-16 after the first quarter. Some hot shooting in the second quarter kept the Mikinocks in the ball game. Shooting well from the outside, and a sluggish shooting percentage kept the Ladyjacks in the ball game. The game score was 44-37 at the half.

In the third quarter, Coach Johnson pointed out that it was the defensive side of the ball that made the difference in this game. "We came out in the third quarter with a bit more defensive fire and held them to four points, changing the momentum of the game," Coach Johnson commented. In the fourth quarter the Ladyjacks defense would allow only 12 points, making the final score Ladyjacks 83 Mikinocks 53.

A large factor for the Ladyjacks was their ability to rebound the basketball. "We had our best rebounding effort of the season on the offensive glass pulling down 29 missed shots. Many of those turned into second chance points," Coach Johnson commented. Leading the Ladyjacks in rebounds was Jaidyn Brummond. She pulled down nine rebounds and added 14 points for the Ladyjacks. Maria Moore found her way into the scoring section of the stats sheet but also filled up all the other categories as well. Moore's stat line would be 12 points, six rebounds, three steals, two blocked shots and two assists.

The Ladyjacks will now head into the break with a record of 9-4, their next action will be after the winter break when they face Northland on January second, in Thief River Falls, Minnesota.
