Ladyjacks win 2 in Hometown Tournament

Great weekend for Lauren Gangl and the Ladyjacks.
Great weekend for Lauren Gangl and the Ladyjacks.

WBB played well this past weekend at the Super 8 Cobblestone Classic held at the Woodshed on DCB's campus.  On Friday, they defeated Canadian Mennonite University from Canada 86-50, then came back on Saturday with a big 96-68 win over Sisseton Wahpeton College from South Dakota.

In Friday's game, DCB's defense played well with 30 offensive rebounds.  Defensively the Ladyjacks didn't give CMU many good looks and did a pretty good job of getting to their defensive spots.  DCB ended up with 30 second chance opportunities compared to CMU's 11, and won the turnover battle 22-13..  It was great to see almost all of our players in the scoring column.  5 Ladyjacks scored in double figues, led by Sydnie Nelson with 13 points and Jayla Howard with 12.  DCB also had two players with over 10 rebounds in Trinity Goggles (11) and Abby Simons (11).  Taylor Keplin contributed to the win with 6 assists and 0 turnovers.  Coach Johnson was pleased withe the outcome:  "I thought our intensity level was high from the tip.  It paid off for us in the way we defended for the first three quarters and in our domination on the offensive boards."

On Saturday, DCB raced out to a 45-31 lead at halftime and never looked back.  DCB continued a strong defensive effort by pulling down 21 rebounds.  Abby Simons had a solid game 18 points and 13 rebounds.  Sydnie Nelson added 17 points and Trinity Goggles pulled down 10 rebounds to go along with her 7 points.  Lauren Gangl did well on the floor with 4 assists and o turnovers.  Coach Johnson had this to say after the game:  "I thought we didn't come out with quite the same intensity and passion as we did last night.  It was reflected in our defensive play.  To our players credit they regrouped and came out in the third quarter with a much stronger defensive effort.  Adding to the improved defensive play in that third quarter was the fact that we got smoking hot from behind the three point line.  The game was still tight with us leading by 11 when we went on a big 18 point run, fueled by some hot shooting, to push the lead to 69-41. That quarter was the ball game.  It was great to see the continued effort on the offensive boards as well."

DCB's next action will be Saturday, November 23rd when the Ladyjacks take on the North Country All-Stars at the Woodshed in Bottineau.  Game time is 2:00 p.m.
