Head softball coach Mike Smith is excited about the team he is assembling for the 2020-21 season.

"We have been able to attract some top prospects that should continue to put us in the elite team category in Division III.  The success we had in 2019, making it to the National Tournament and finishing sixth, and the team we had this spring (opened the season ranked in the top 10) has allowed us to be an attractive option for players.  Certainly I would have loved to see what we could have done this past spring with a really special group of players.  We would have been getting ready for playoffs about now and instead we are building for the next season,"  stated Smith

The team expects six players back for next season.  1st year players Vivionnna Robles, Vannity Robles, Marlene Tapia, Brittney Villalobos, and Lauren Gangl will all be back for their sophomore year of school.  Each player has been granted an extra year of eligibility and will be competing officially in their first season of college softball in 2021.  Sophomore Claire Hiebert coulod also return to the team for her third year at DCB as she can finish her RN degree.  She also would receive another year of eligibility and would be playing her second season with DCB next spring.

The team previously announced the signing of Isabel Rodriguez of Las Vegas, NV, McKenzie Bales of Glenn Heights, TX, Alezandria Guariglia of Las Vegas, NV, Jennah Lematta of Fessenden, ND and hockey/softball player Brynn Wuttunee of Martensville, SK Canada.

The team has announced Jessica Mendoza of Hesperia, California, Mary McKay (hockey/softball) of Red Earth First Nation, SK Canada as well as a pair of Washington state Seniors Megan Davidson (North Creek) and Jinnori Serino (Spanaway) have been added to the roster.

Jessica Mendoza:  "I saw Jessica play in Las Vegas last summer and she impressed me with her skill but also her desire to play at the college level.  She is willing to do whatever it takes and is humble and just a really nice kid.  Her sister played four years of college ball so she knows what it takes to be successful balancing academics and softball.  She will likely compete for a spot in the outfield but she can play in the infield as well."

Mary MacKay:  "Mary is one of our new hockey players and will come to camp as a bit of an unknown.  I saw a little video and she looks like she has potential to be a college pitcher.  She has good size and she comes from an area in Saskatchewan that has a rich tradition in softball.  I'm excited to get her on the field in September and see how she fits in."

Megan Davidson:  "Megan is a catcher that can play 2B and is athletic enough to play in the outfield.  I saw her play in Las Vegas and she will help us in our drive to make another National Championship.  She is a good defensive catcher, hustles all the time, has a great attitude and comes from a great softball organization.  Looking forward to seeing her play in the Green and White."

Jinnori Serino:  "I saw Jinnori on video and began the recruiting process immediately.  She is a skilled infielder, has a good arm and is fast!  She is a 2.8 runner to first base and will add to our overall improved team speed.  I expect she will compete for a spot in the top of our batting order.  What really helped seal the deal with Jinnori was she wanted to study Wildlife management.  Welcome to DCB"!

Hockey player Madison Crawford of Shellbrook, SK Canada is another possible addition to the roster as she is a two-sport athlete.  I would like to see Madison play this summer back home in Saskatchewan if there is a season.  If not we will bring her to fall practices and see where she fits in.

The roster currently sits at 15.  Smith would like to sign another player or two.  "We try to keep the roster small so that players coming in have a chance to play in their first season," explained Smith.  "I have my eye on a few players and should be finished with 2020-21 recruiting by the end of May."
