Jacks Sweep DCB Classic

The Lumberjack men's basketball team picked up a weekend sweep of the DCB Classic winning 100-78 over Minnesota North Vermillion on Friday and 87-70 over Minnesota North Hibbing on Saturday.

100-78 Win over Vermillion

The Jacks would take the lead early in the contest, but the Ironhawks would keep it close for the early portions of the first half. A 15-4 run just past the midway point of the first half would give the Jacksa 35-19 lead. Max Groom and Danny Lazic would pace the Jacks offense with 13 and 10 points respectively De'Andre White helped keep Vermillion in striking distance with 14 points off the bench. Thanks to a 53% shooting percentage from the field DCB held a 46-33 halftime lead.

The Jacks offense really found a groove in the second half with three players scoring in double figures Groom dropped in 18 more Wai'apo Louis scored 13 points in the quarter, and Lazic added 10 more points. As a team DCB shot 65.5% from the field in the second half and were able to go on to win the game 100-78.

Groom led all scorers with 31 points on the night with a perfect 10-10 shooting performance. He was joined by three other Jacks in double-figures Lazic finished with 20, Louis dropped in 16, and Phil Gibaut added 10 points off the bench. Quyavant Douglas led Vermillion with 28 points.

87-70 Win over Hibbing

The Jacks would maintain a small lead throughout the first half thanks to a strong offensive output from Lazic with 12 first half points. Groom got it done on both ends of the floor with 9 points and 7 rebounds. Luke Valencia had a nice first half with 7 points. Nick Buchanan allowed the Cardinals to keep it close with 10 first half points. At the half DCB led 38-27.

For the second consecutive night Louis had a big second half with 24 points including 12-13 from the free throw line. Late in the contest DCB was able to push their lead to 22 points at 79-57. Philip Sheetz would knock down three three-pointers in a row and cut the Jacks lead down to 13, but that's as close as Hibbing would get as DCB would go on to win 87-70.

Louis would lead four Jacks in double-figures with 27 points, Lazic scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. Groom also picked up a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Valencia finished with 12 points. Sheetz led the Cards and all scorers with 28 points including 9 three pointers.

With the wins DCB moves to 3-2 overall. Next up the Jacks travel to Northland Community College Tuesday game time set for 7:30p.m.
