Lumberjacks Hold On

The Lumberjacks basketball team was looking to get to the .500 mark on Tuesday night, as they squared off with the Mikinocks from Turtle Mountain Community College. The Lumberjacks were coming into the game on a four-game winning streak, winning five out of their last six. They looked to finish off the fall semester on a high note in the Woodshed.

The Lumberjacks came out firing on all cylinders on Tuesday night, as the Mikinocks came out in a 2-3 zone the Lumberjacks picked it apart, knocking down shots from the outside, as well as knifing through the zone. Due to the early shooting dominance by the Lumberjacks, the Mikinocks had to come out of the zone and play man to man defense. Surafel Berhanie had the hot hand for the Lumberjacks, dropping in 17 points in the first half, and going 5-7 from behind the arc. By halftime the Lumberjacks led 62-37.

The second half was a different story for the Lumberjacks though, their shooting percentages went down and the Mikinocks were able to climb their way back into the ball game. The Lumberjacks went 2-17 from behind the arc in the second half, allowing the Mikinocks to pack in their zone and keep the Lumberjacks from getting open shots. In the final minutes the Mikinocks were within 2 points, with 88-86 on the scoreboard. Eventually, the Lumberjacks regained control, executing each position and having it end with a bucket. Clutch free throw shooting also contributed to the Lumberjacks holding on and winning 97-90, sweeping the two games against the Mikinocks this season, and bringing the Lumberjacks record to .500 going into the winter break.

DeAngelo Bell led the scoring for the Lumberjacks with 22 points, followed by Berhanie who scored 21 points for the Lumberjacks. Akok Aguer and Marcell Drone would lead the Lumberjacks on the board as they both collected seven rebounds respectfully. The Mikinocks were led in scoring by Wyatt Enno who led all scorers with 23 points.

The Lumberjacks are back in action after the winter break as they travel to Thief River Falls, Minnesota on January 2nd, followed a few days later (January 6th) by a trip to Williston State College to take on the Tetons.
