Jacks Baseball Splits Home Opening Double-header

The DCB Lumberjacks baseball team split a home double-header with Northland College on Wednesday pushing their record to 4-4.

For the full story lets take a look at Head Coach Mark Lacroix's game notes!

Yesterday was the first home games of the season for the Lumberjacks as they took on the Northland Technical Community College Pioneers. The Lumberjacks and the Pioneers played a double header at the Lumberyard where both teams split on the day. In game one the Pioneers got the best of the Lumberjacks 13-3 before they would bounce back and win Game 2 7-6.

Game 1 for the Lumberjacks saw the young team jump out right away and get that zero off the board by scoring one in the bottom of the first inning. Wolfdon Thorson lead off by working a 9 pitch at bat before earning a walk. Yaniel De Jesus would come up later in the inning and signal to center field scoring Wolfdon Thorson from second base. After that though it was mostly all Northern as they scored 4 runs in the next two frames before tagging the Lumberjacks pitching staff for 7 in the 5th inning. Most of the damages done by Northland was done with 2 outs, as out of the 13 runs that the Pioneers scored 8 of them were scored with 2 outs.

In Game 2 the Lumberjacks were determined to turn things around. Right away again the Lumberjacks came out and got themselves a run but this time they did not look back. In the first 3 innings of play the Lumberjacks built a 5-1 advantage over the Pioneers. Big part of that came when Sandon Isle hit a double into the right field gap that scored both Nate Huarte and Casey Mack.

The dramatics did not stop from their though, the Pioneers also were determined to win this game and came fighting back. With the help of some miscues by the Lumberjacks defense the Pioneers came all the way back to make the game 7-6 going into the bottom of the 7th. The Pioneers would start the bottom half with a walk before a pop up and a throw away would advance the runner all the way to 3rd. With the tieing run at 3rd base Freshman pitcher Tyler Comben took his game to the next level. With two outs to go Comben got a weak grounder to him with the first hitter in this situation before making a leaping play to end. With the a line drive hit off to his left side Comben dove for the ball, fully extended and made the catching. Making the final score 7-6. Dillon Marco picked up the win for the Lumberjacks and Tyler Comben was awarded with the save.

For the Lumberjacks they will be hosting another 4 game set against the Miles City Pioneers this upcoming weekend here in Bottineau. Game times are 1 and 3 on Saturday and 12 and 2 on Sunday. The Lumberjacks are scheduled to have their next 6 games at home.
